New Delhi: The Union Human Resource Ministry is all set to initiate a CBI inquiry against Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Vice Chancellor PK Abdul Azis who is facing charges of financial irregularities and some other allegations.

The Ministry action is expected soon as President Pratibha Patil gave her nod for a CBI inquiry. The HRD Ministry would possibly forward the recommendation to the CBI next week.

Earlier two separate committees were set up to probe the charges against Abdul Azis, but none of them came to any conclusion within the given time.

When first committee could not complete its task another two member committee was set up headed by Justice BA Khan and AN Divecha. The second committee alleged non-cooperation on part of Abdul Azis.

The committee failed to draw any conclusion because of difference in the views of both justices, despite getting extensions.

At last HRD Ministry decided to hand over the case to CBI.

AMU students have protested several times against Abdul Azis in the past raising questions over his style of functioning.

Former member of University Executive Council, Waseem Ahmed had also demanded a thorough probe against the VC to late HRD Minister Arjun Singh and the incumbent kapil Sibal.
