New Delhi: Former Lok Sabha Speaker PA Sangma on Tuesday met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee seeking support to his candidature for the President’s post.

I am happy with my talks with Mamata didi. They (TMC) will communicate their decision after discussing in the party,” said PA Sangma after the meet.

Notably, Sangma’s meeting with the TMC supremo is crucial since she had earlier refused to meet him.

Mamata, who has pinned all her hopes on former President APJ Abdul Kalam for the country’s top most post, has so far not revealed whether she will support opposition presidential candidate Sangma against UPA nominee Pranab Mukherjee.

It is noteworthy, the Tuesday’s meet between the two leaders clearly indicates TMC’s inclination towards the non-UPA candidate Sangma, as so far the TMC chief has not met Mukherjee or spoken to him about the presidential poll, but on Tuesday she had finally met the former Lok Sabha speaker.

Pitted against United Progressive Alliance rival Pranab Mukherjee, Sangma has the backing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and some constituents of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), as also the AIADMK and the Biju Janata Dal.

However, the electoral arithmetic seems to be favouring Mukherjee now with all UPA constituents except Trinamool rooting for him and parties like the Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party, Communist Party of India-Marxist, the All India Forward Bloc, the Janata Dal-United and the Shiv Sena also expressing their support.

Mamata Banerjee has so far been firmly opposing Mukherjee's bid for the country's presidency.
