Midnapore: Acting on a tip-off, the police and security forces on Sunday arrested Asit Mahato, the prime accused in the Gyaneshwari train mishap.

The chief spokesperson of the People`s Committee against Police Atrocities (PCPA), Mahato who carried a cash reward on his head, was arrested from the Bhimpur Jungle in the west Midnapore area.

According to sources, during the interrogation of Maoist Suman Maiti alias Sonta on November 11, the police got to know about Mahato’s presence the Bhimpur Jungle.

After laying the trap from all sides of the jungle, Mahato was finally nabbed by the joint team.
  
At least 150 passengers of a Maharashtra-bound Howrah-Kurla Lokmanya Tilak Gyaneshwari Super Deluxe Express train were killed and over 200 injured in a Maoist-backed attack which led to derailment of 13 coaches that were hit by a goods train coming from the opposite direction on May 28, 2010.

During the investigation conducted by the CBI, it was found that PCPA was responsible for the attack. The police had announced a bounty of Rs 1 lakh on Mahato.
