Patna: About 20 prisoners on Saturday launched a fast inside the high-security Beur jail here seeking removal of jail superintendent and some other prison officials for their alleged ‘highhandedness and brutality’ on inmates.

The inmates sat on fast at Golghar inside the jail in support of their demand against the jail officials, official sources said.

Bihar Youth Congress president Lallan Kumar claimed that the situation inside the jail had become ‘volatile’ and said the government should immediately remove jail superintendent Satyam Priyadarshi and his deputy Amarjit Singh.

"The prisoners are on fast as the two officials roughed up various prisoners... They have been assaulting them on petty issues and hurling choicest invectives," Kumar alleged.

Alleging rampant corruption prevailed inside the Beur jail, Kumar said he had complained to Lokayukta Chandra Mohan Prasad seeking his immediate intervention. Priyadarshi had rubbished the charges.

Priyadarshi said that he was discharging his duties with sincerity and had toned up the jail administration.
