Amethi: Congress’ star campaigner Priyanka Gandhi took everyone by surprise in Amethi on Thursday when she arrived there with her children Rehan and Miraya to address an election rally prior to second phase of Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh.

Seeing the kids, the partly leaders and supporters recalled the days when over two decades back former Prime Minister Late Rajiv Gandhi would visit the area with his kids Priyanka and Rahul.

Immersed in reminiscences on seeing Rehan and Miraya, Congress president of Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Nagar district, Prem Narayan Tiwari, said that Rajivji would visit the area with his kids Rahul and Priyanka during 1984-1989. This was the period when Rajiv Gandhi was the Prime Minister of India and represented Amethi in the Lok Sabha.

Recalling the old days, Tiwari further added, “That’s when Rahul and Priyanka learned the basics of politics from here and saw the real face of rural India. Seeing the children with Priyanka, it seems that history is repeating itself.”

Recalling the old days, former Amethi Block Congress president, Rammurti Shukla said, “Holding their father’s fingers, Priyanka and Rahul would visit many sites of spiritual importance located here like- the tomb of Malik Mohammad Jaisi, Tikarmafi Ashram and Nand Mahar.” Shukla who published a news paper ‘Amethi mail’ during Rajiv Gandhi era, added that he was a witness to the period.
