Abhinav Bindra became the icon of Indian sports when he won the first and only individual Olympic gold medal at 2008 Beijing Games. It was India's first gold medal since 1980 (hockey).

He won the 10m Air Rifle event four years ago with a near perfect final shot to score 10.8 points, after he was tied till penultimate shot with Finnish shooter Henri Hakkinen (who eventually settled for bronze).

Bindra qualified for 2012 London Games despite finishing a lowly eighth at the Munich Shooting World Cup in June, 2011. He clinched Olympics quota place as the top six finishers in the event had already booked their berths in previous qualifying events.
