Vijender Singh became the first Indian boxer to qualify for the Olympic Games for a third successive time after reaching the semifinals of the Asian Olympic qualifiers in Astana, Kazakhstan on April 8, 2012.

2012 London Olympics is his third foray in the sport's biggest extravaganza after participating in the 2004 Athens Games and Beijing Games in 2008, where he won a bronze medal.

After winning the first ever Olympic medal in boxing at Beijing, Vijender Singh became a household name in India and the face of Indian boxing. The bronze in 2008 Beijing Olympics inspired many youths to take up the sport in India.

Vijender was bestowed the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award - India's highest sporting honour - in 2009 for his Beijing exploits.
