Kolkata: The convener of Police Santrash Birodhi Janasadharaner Committee (PSBJC), Chhatradhar Mahato, currently lodged in Midnapore Central Jail, has demanded an autonomous council for Junglemahal.

In his statement, Mahto has appealed to the Junglemahal residents to observe a non-cooking day on August 15 and to form a human chain in favour of 20 point demands including withdrawal of Central forces and cancellation of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Mahto has also appealed the jailed inmates to participate in the hunger strike.

Thousands of supporters of Ganatantrik Manch and an NGO took part in processions on Thursday demanding the immediate release of Mahato.

Secretary of the Ganatantrik Manchya Ashok Jibon alleged that the combined forces had ransacked 5 buses carrying Manch supporters in Bandarbhula village under Jhargram Police Station.

It should be noted that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has set up the Bandi Mukti Committee, a panel constituted to chalk out strategies to release political prisoners. Earlier, the Committee had held a meeting with Maoist leaders in Midnapore Central Jail, where an 18-point charter of demands was put before the committee.
