Allahabad: The staff and employees in at least three dozen government and eight dozen private offices in Sangam city are reeling under constant threat of fire mishap. Ill-equipped Fire Department and various public and private buildings of Allahabad are flouting fire safety norms.

According to sources, there are no adequate fire safety measures in these private and public offices. While a few buildings lack fire-fighting equipments some do not comply with the fire safety norms.

What adds to the irony is the fact that the fire department itself is ill-equipped to face emergency situations.

Decipher this: Fire department sans hydraulic ladder used to douse fire in multi-storey buildings. There are no fire-proof helmets for the fire tenders nor are they provided with the prosecuting suit or fire-proof boots. The fire department is facing an acute shortage of manpower. Despite frequent transfers of fire tenders, several post are still lying vacant in the district.

 Fire department which has only 12 big vehicles and five small pumps is not equipped with modern machinery.

Confirming this,Chief Fire Officer (CFO) Satish Chandra said, “Against the fire safety norms, several public and non-public buildings do not have the fire fighting arrangements. Although the department is facing staff crunch, the manpower gap would soon be filled.”

Chandra claimed to have apprised the higher authorities of the staff crunch. “The officials have assured of increasing the staff and filling the vacancies at the earliest,” he added.

The CFO also informed that the department has added few new fire brigades which would help in handling the situation in city.

Koranv area sans fire station

Five of the six tehsils of the district namely Meja, Karchana, Bara, Phoolpur, Soranv and Handia, have the facility of fire stations. Trans-Yamuna area of Koranv sans a fire station, therefore it is deprived of fire brigade facility. There is hardly any day when no fire incident is reported in the area. Consequently, during major fire incidents, fire brigades are to be called from neighbouring Meja and Naini. Similarly, Kaurihar and Holagarh of Soranv tehsil are facing dearth of fire arrangements. Locals have been demanding setting up of a fire station here.
