Puducherry, Jan 12 (Agencies): The Puducherry Assembly budget session is likely to commence from February 2.

Reportedly, the official sources said that with assembly polls due in the next few months, the session would adopt a vote on account for the first few months of the new fiscal through an interim budget.

“A formal recommendation was made to the Lt Governor by a cabinet meeting held under chairmanship of Chief Minister V Vaithilingam on Tuesday that the session be summoned to meet on February 2,” the sources added.

As this is the first session of the New Year, the Lt Governor would present his customary address to mark the commencement of the session, the sources said.

The Assembly has a total strength of 30 elected members with ruling Congress having 13 legislators on its side.the DMK supporting the government from outside has a strength of seven members. Three Independent members also support the government from outside.

On the opposition side the AIADMK has three legislators while the PMK has two members and the MDMK and CPI one member each. There are three nominated members also in the Assembly with Congress, PMK and CPI having one each.

The session will meet in the wake of developments including the floating of `N.R.Peravai by some 'dissident' Congress workers supporting former Chief Minister N Rangasamy. The Peravai had at a meeting urged Rangasamy to convert the Peravai into a political party to take on the Congress in the coming polls. However Rangasamy has been keeping silent without reacting to the developments.

The coming assembly polls will be the first after delimitation of constituencies.

After delimitation Puducherry will have 23 constituencies against 21 it had all along. But Karaikal will have only five instead of six constituencies. Mahe will also have only one constituency against two while Yanam will continue to be a lone segment.
