Puducherry, (Agency): Puducherry Chief Minister V Vaithilingam presented a tax free interim budget in the territorial assembly seeking allocation of Rs 2,241 crore for the first six months of the fiscal 2011-2012.

Presenting the budget, Vaithilingam, who is also holding finance portfolio, said as the term of present assembly would be ending in May, the annual plan outlay for the fiscal 2011-2012 could not be finalised.

Vaithilingam said the revenue generation from sales tax had increased from Rs 365 crore in 2006-2007 to Rs 645 crore in 2010-2011. He said said the excise collection, which was Rs 143.49 crore during 2006-2007, had increased to Rs 370 crore in
 2010-2011.

Opposition AIADMK, CPI and MDMK alleged that the government had failed in curbing prices of essential commodities and made vociferous protest against the government.

In his customary address, Lt Governor Dr Iqbal Singh said the Centre had sanctioned Rs 66 crore for implementation of police modernisation scheme in the Union Territory in the current five year plan (2007-2012).
