Speaking to reporters, he said that government would cover 4,000 huts in the first phase and each owner would be given Rs four lakh as housing subsidy. Scheduled Caste beneficiaries would benefit under the scheme, he said.
     
He said that the Housing and Urban Development Corporation had already enabled the government to construct 1,556 houses by granting soft loans under another scheme covering poorer sections at the rate of Rs 590 per house.
    
The houses would be handed over once basic amenities like power supply, water and roads are provided, he said.
     
Rajavelu, who also holds the Tourism portfolio, said the amount of Rs 125 crore sanctioned by the Centre for tourism related projects was yet to be made available. A review meeting had been convened by Lt Governor Virendra Kataria on October 26 to discuss the various tourism projects.
    
He said a special component sub plan had been evolved to provide amenities to SCs in their residential areas. As many as 21 departments were implementing the schemes for which Rs 346 crore had been earmarked under the current annual plan.
     
He said that Rs 1000 gift coupons would be given to building workers attached to Puducherry Building Workers Board as a Diwali gift.
