Puducherry: Puducherry Electricity and Forests Minister T Thiagarajan on Wednesday said as many as one lakh saplings are being planted in different parts of the Union Territory to restore the green cover which got reduced during December 30, 2011 ‘Thane’ cyclone.

Releasing a report on the occasion of World Environment Day organized by the Department of Science, Technology and Environment in Puducherry on Wednesday, he said as a part of steps to regain green cover, around one lakh saplings are being planted in association with various Non-Governmental Organizations.

He called upon the people to avoid wastage of food as the theme of the current year`s celebration of World Environment day was ‘Think, Eat and Save’.

He said that care should be taken during celebration of social functions like marriage so that food does not get wasted.
