Puducherry: The Puducherry government has introduced a social security scheme, superceding similar ones, to provide financial aid to members of Below Poverty Line (BPL) families.
    
A Department of Revenue and Disaster Management press release on Thursday that the 'Rajiv Gandhi Social Security scheme for poor families-2012' was designed to provide financial aid to BPL families in the event of death or partial or permanent disability of family members.
 
Persons in the 18-60 years age bracket would be covered under the scheme, it said, adding that the scheme introduced in a consolidated manner would come into retrospective effect from March 25, 2011.

A family is considered as in the BPL category if the annual income is less than Rs 24,000.
 
The release said Rs 30,000 would be provided to the next of the kin of a person dying due to natural causes while for deaths due to unnatural circumstances the amount is Rs 75,000.

For permanent disability arising out of accidents, the aid would be Rs 75,000 to the person and partial disability would involve a payment of Rs 37,500.
