Puducherry: Puducherry Lt Governor Iqbal Singh on Saturday assured the people that the government would take urgent steps to bring back normalcy in the union territory which bore the brunt of the cyclonic fury "Thane" which left a trail of damge to both life and property.

In his New Year day message, Singh said that having overcome the initial trauma caused by cyclone, "we shall welcome the year 2012 with renewed hope and bright prospects".

He also wished the dawn of New Year 2012 would bring in progress and prosperity which would fulfill the dreams of the people in each and every home of Puducherry.

Chief Minister N Rangasamy in his message said the cyclone had caused immense damages. However, the government had launched speedy measures to relieve the people of their agony.

Rangasamy said that his government was committed to give full protection to all sections of people.

Wishing the people a happy and prosperous new year, he said "My government would spare no efforts to bring in happiness to lives of the people here".

In Karaikal, Agriculture Minister M Chandrakasu said would take immediate steps for providing relief to the farmers and fishermen affected by the cyclonic storm.

Talkint to reporters, he said that the cyclonic storm had affected the farmers and fishermen of the district to a great extent. "I briefed the situation to the Chief Minister Rangasamy and he has assured immediate action for providing relief to the affected people," he said.
