New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission on Friday issued a notice to Pune Police Commissioner asking him to file a report within four weeks on the alleged police firing on agitating farmers, in which four persons were killed.

Acting on a complaint, the NHRC asked the Police Commissioner to file the report.

Police, on August 9, opened fire on the farmers, who were protesting against the laying of a pipeline leading to violence.

The controversy erupted over the police firing at Maval, near Pune after a video footage showed some policemen apparently aiming their guns and shooting at unarmed protesters.

Video footage of the incident aired by TV channels showed the farmers running away as the policemen fired at them indiscriminately and not in the air.

Police had claimed that the firing was prompted after they were attacked by farmers with stones and their jeeps burnt while they were negotiating with the farmers' leaders.
