Lucknow: The fight between the Congress and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) to win the confidence of Dalit voters is nearing it’s pinnacle. Deepening the chasm between the two political rivals even further, National Commission for Schedule Castes (NCSC) Chairman PL Punia has launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Mayawati for failing to check the atrocities on Dalits in the state.

The recent dispute between the two political outfits was sparked off as the BSP government denied allotting rooms in the state guest house to the Commission members to hold a meeting. Annoyed over the issue, Punia has claimed to set up a Commission to probe into the matter.

The NCSC had informed the state government regarding the state level review meeting on July 26-27, but the latter expressed its inability to hold the same citing the preparation of Assembly session as a major reason.

In addition, the NCSC intends to summon Vice Chancellor and officials of the Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University in context to few cases were Dalits students had been allegedly failed on their behest.

Talking to reporters on Tuesday, Bahraich parliamentarian Punia said the state government has deliberately delayed the dates for the review meetings.

He held the state government responsible for not allowing the NCSC to investigate into the Medical College issue.
With specific reference to its observation about Dalit atrocities in UP, the NCSC cited the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) figures to prove its point.
