Chandigarh: In an embarrassment for the Shiromani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party government in Punjab, the anti-corruption unit of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday arrested MLA and Chief Parliamentary Secretary Raj Khurana for receiving bribe of Rs 1.5 crore. The arrest was made after a 12-hour long interrogation at 7 am on Thursday from Khurana’s official residence.

Devinder Singh, a senior official of registrar of societies department, who played the role of a middleman in the deal was also arrested along with Khurana. The CBI recovered Rs 15 lakh including 9 blank cheques with some important documents. The CBI on Wednesday night and also raided the Mohali residence of Devinder Singh.

The Khurana's arrest sparked off a heat in the political landscape.  Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal clearly said that any kind of wrongdoing would not be tolerated and if the CBI registered a case against Khurana, he would have to submit his resignation.

While, State Congress President Captain Amarinder Singh said, that the Akali-BJP government should be dismissed in the wake of the rampant corruption that has been found in the state.

It may be noted that Punjab Automobile Mechanics Association’s General Secretary Manpreet Singh filed a complaint against Devinder Singh stating that earlier he asked for Rs 2 crore as bribe but later agreed for Rs 1.5 crore. Devinder had told Manpreet that his work would be done once the amount reached Raj Khurana.

Following the complaint, CBI swung into action and arrested Khurana. Simultaneously other team also recovered Rs 15 lakh cash and 9 Blank Cheques from his car parked outside the house.
According to sources, CBI is soon going to clamp down other government officials involved in the graft.
