Patiala: Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on Wednesday said he was against setting up of a nuclear power plant in the state.

Instead, the state would ban on thermal power plants, he told reporters in village Nalash, 45-km from here.

"I am against setting up of a nuclear power plant as safety of people is our priority," Badal said.

Thermal power plants were being constructed with the help of private companies in the state, he said.

But, Punjab wanted to set up state-owned thermal power plants, Badal said.

The Deputy Chief Minister visited Rajpura Thermal Plant, being constructed by L&T at a cost of Rs 8000 crore, in village Nalash.

The first unit of the plant would be commissioned on December 15 next year, he said.
