Firozpur: The Punjab government on Saturday announced to hike the salary of state home guards by Rs 1500 ahead of the implementation of model code of conduct in the state following the announcement of poll schedule for assembly elections.

The government has also announced free travel to home guards in the public transport buses. The decision will benefit approximately 13,000 jawans in the state.

Home guards have been demanding free travel facility in the government buses for the past many years.

Earlier, the government had refused to accept their demands, but now it has allowed them to travel facility in the state roadways and PRTS buses for free of cost.

They will be paid salary at the rate of Rs 11,000 per month, a communiqué issued by the government added.

Confirming the government’s announcement RK Awasthy, Commander of state home guards said, “The notification copy of the government’s decision has been faxed to them (home guards) on Saturday. T he decision will come into effect from December 1.”
