Chandigarh: In a measure to put the state government in tight spot, the Punjab Congress blamed that Dalits and poor are being cheated by the ruling dispensation in the state.

The Congress MLA, Sunil Jakhar, pulled up the Akali government for cutting free electricity being supplied to the Dalit populace.

Jakhar said, “On the one hand, the government is making the claim that there is no shortage of funds for the development, on the other the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has not fulfilled its commitments mentioned in its election manifesto.”

He accused the government of going back on its promise of giving 400 units of electricity free to Dalits. Instead of keeping its words, the state government has cut down free electricity to them.

“As Dalits do not form the mass vote bank for the SAD, the government has withdrawn this facility,” he said.

“Given the present power tariff, the bill for the 200 units comes to around Rs 525 per month. For the poor, this is a massive amount during this inflationary phase. With this decision, nearly 9.25 lakh Dalit families have been affected.”
