Chandigarh: The decision of the government to rename Windsor Place chowk in Connaught Place area of the national capital after Sobha Singh is gradually developing into a major controversy, especially in Punjab.

A local Punjab group - Bhagat Singh Kranti Sena - has issued a warning of holding a nationwide protest and hunger strikes over Central government’s proposal. The controversy has also started taking political colours as the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders have joined the protest.

BJP Legislature Party Leader in Punjab, Tikshan Sud has said that glorifying the man who testified against freedom fighter Bhagat Singh is insulting to the whole nation.

Joining the anti-Sobha chorus, Tajinder pal singh , chief of Bhagat Singh Kranti Sena, said, “Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt were executed because Shobha Singh had given statement against them in Lahore assembly bomb case.”

“Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s proposal to rename Windsor Place after Shobha Singh in a letter to Chief Minister Shiela Dixit on June 26 has insulted the freedom fighters,” Tajinder added.

He said that protests in form of stickers, posters and signature movement would be launched against the government proposal.
