New Delhi: Jumping into action in wake of the announcement of poll date for Punjab Assembly elections, the Congress has decided to hold Screening Committee meeting here on Tuesday, to further accelerate the process for selection of candidates.

The first list of the candidates for Punjab polls is expected to be announced in the first week of January.

While Screening Committee Chairman CP Joshi will reach Delhi on Monday, the Punjab leaders have already started pouring in the capital. Majority of the contenders are busy approaching the members of the screening committee as well as the Union ministers to figure in the selection panel list.

The screening committee mainly comprises Delhi Congress president JP Agarwal as the Deputy-Chairman of the panel, party General Secretary and state Congress in-charge Gulchain Singh Charak, state Chairman Captain Amarinder Singh and Legislature party leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal.

According to sources, committee Chairman Joshi and Deputy-Chairman Agarwal will play a key role in weeding out weak contenders in finalising the list. The prevalence of groupism in Punjab has lead to long list of names for the contenders for which Joshi has already made it clear that not more than three names will be included in the panel.

The qualities and flaws of the contenders will also be discussed during the meeting of the screening committee.
