Chandigarh: The Punjab government has informed the Punjab and Haryana High Court that it has a proper policy in place to protect RTI activists in the state. The state government submitted an affidavit as a response to a hearing of PIL in the High Court seeking protection for RTI activists in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh.

The court had directed the Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh administration about handling the rising attacks on the RTI activists in the region.

During the hearing, Chandigarh administration informed the court about the committee comprising police and intelligence officers that have been set up to protect RTI activists.

Revealing its policies, the Punjab government said that the RTI activists can now contact the District Magistrate or the Police Commissioner to seek protection. “The case will be investigated within 48 hours,” the affidavit claimed.

However, the petitioner urged further improvement in polices of the Punjab government suggesting setting up of a nodal agency regulated by senior officials who will be easily accessible by the general public.
