Mansa, Fatehgarh: Lambasting the SAD-BJP alliance for talking about converting Punjab into California, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Friday appealed to the people of the state to vote for Congress in order to protect the interests of Punjab.

He said this while addressing election rallies in Mansa and Fatehgarh.

“People are moving to other countries from Punjab. The SAD-BJP government is talking about converting Punjab into California. They are misusing the central funds and public money as well,” he said.

“The centre sanctioned Rs 12,000 crore to the state for the MNREGA scheme, Rs 13,000 crore for Guru Gobind Singh Refinery. The centre also waved off Rs 60,000 farmers’ loan. The centre sanctioned Rs 34,000 crore for education,” Rahul claimed.

Rahul further promised to make Punjab number one state if Congress is voted to power.

He also charged NDA of stealing India Shining slogan from a television advertisement.

“The UPA at the centre is working for ‘aam aadmi’. Congress never copies any slogan. The BJP is giving shelter to corrupt BSP ministers in Uttar Pradesh. On the other hand, the Congress has always taken immediate and effective steps against corrupt ministers,” the Amethi MP said.

Elections in Punjab would be held in a single phase on January 30.
