Chandigarh: Punjab will soon introduce a uniform building code in order to ensure planned growth for its urban areas and a hassle-free delivery of services to the residents.

Presiding over the meeting of urban development department on Tuesday, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal said different sets of building bylaws were creating confusion both for the real estate developers and residents.

Lack of uniformity in building laws was resulting in haphazard growth in the urban areas, he said.

The new code will check harassment of both builders as well as public at the hands of authorities, and will help in early clearance of building plans submitted by residents, Sukhbir asserted.

He said the urban development authorities have been asked to come out with a model set of building bylaws which would be applicable to all buildings of the state.

Sukhbir said that he has separately ordered decentralisation of building plan approval system to encourage people opt for the approved plan and ensure uniform development of urban areas.
