Patiala: Punjab University, Patiala, will institute an award in the name of former Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral.

The decision was taken keeping in view Gujral's distinguished contribution to the fields of public service, diplomacy, international affairs and for furthering the cause of Punjabi culture, Dr Jaspal Singh, Vice-Chancellor of the University, said on Sunday.

The institution had earlier conferred Gujral the degree of Doctor of Literature (Honoris Causa). Describing the leader as a committed and devoted Punjabi, Singh said the University will also start a special series of lectures on the Gujral Doctrine, which deals with India's relations with its neighbours.

The forthcoming meeting of the institution's syndicate will be taken into confidence for the ratification of these decisions, Singh added.
