He was seen seated in the ninth row along with party colleagues Asrar-ul Haq and Shashi Tharoor.

Those occupying the front benches on the opposition side included Leader of Congress in the House Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, M Veerappa Moily and KH Muniyappa.

Incidentally, BJP leader Varun Gandhi was also occupying one of the rear benches on the Treasury side.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and all other MPs were present on the opening day of the newly-elected 16th Lok Sabha, which was adjourned for the day after paying tribute to Union Minister Gopinath Munde.

The United Progressive Alliance led by the Indian National Congress faced a humiliating defeat in Lok Sabha polls, winning just 58 seats, of which the Congress bagged 44.

It was the Congress party's worst defeat in a general election. The BJP got a clear mandate to form the government.

Though Rahul Gandhi, who was fielded against BJP’s Smriti Irani, saved his seat in family bastion Amethi.

The National Democratic Alliance led by the Bharatiya Janata Party under the vision of Modi, swept the polls winning 336 seats. The BJP on its own won 282 seats.
