On being asked about BJP’s move to name the Gujarat strongman Narendra Modi as its PM nominee, Shinde said, “Any small or big political party can declare its prime ministerial candidate ahead of the 2014 general elections.”

Shinde added that the Congress has already declared that Rahul Gandhi is its leader.

The endorsement by Shinde comes days after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that he will be ‘very happy’ to work under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi. Recently, some other Congress leaders like Tarun Gogoi and Shiela Dikshit too had hailed Rahul as ideal prime ministerial candidate.

With BJP all set to name Modi as its prime ministerial candidate after a go-ahead from RSS, the Congress is weighing its option of pitching Rahul against the saffron strongman.
Ramlal, General Secretary (Organization), who is the RSS pointsman in BJP, has been given the task of choosing a date before September 19 to hold a meeting of the parliamentary board, the party's highest decision-making body.

After the parliamentary board meeting, the BJP is likely to name Modi as its prime ministerial candidate.
