New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi will be visiting his Parliamentary seat Amethi from Thursday, his first visit after the AICC has started effecting changes in the state party unit to make it fighting fit ahead of the next Lok Sabha elections.

The two-day visit comes at a time when the party has decided to divide Uttar Pradesh in eight zones for strengthening the organisation in the wake of the party's debacle in the Assembly polls earlier this year.

Senior leaders, including Union ministers, are being given responsibility as conveners for different zones in a move to revive the party ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

Each zone will consist of 10 parliamentary seats.

Sources said newly-appointed PCC chief Nirmal Khatri will be coordinating with the regional in-charges on a regular basis. While Khatri is the new PCC chief, Pradip Mathur has replaced Pramod Tewari as the CLP leader.

AICC sources said the new arrangement is being worked out for better coordination and to accommodate all sections.

For each zone there will be a separate incharge who will work in coordination with newly appointed PCC chief.

The zonal incharges will have the task to consolidate the party at grassroots level. They will be mainly responsible for Lok Sabha results in the 10 seats which each of them have been allotted.

The zonal incharges will recommend the names to be given party tickets. Their recommendations and opinion will be considered seriously by the party leadership, sources said.

The names of P L Punia, R P N Singh, Jitin Prasad, Rashid Masood, Rajaram Pal and Vivek Singh among others are doing the rounds for the new slots. However, no formal announcement has been made so far.

Sources downplayed the absence of Union ministers Salman Khurshid, Beni Prasad Verma or Sriprakash Jaiswal in the new zonal set-up saying they are senior cabinet ministers and have their onerous responsibilities in the government.

Gandhi has been taking special interest in Uttar Pradesh where he had led the Congress campaign in the last Assembly polls. Khatri is said to be his choice.
