Lucknow: Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Sunday visited Nadva, a renowned centre of Islamic learning, and met its rector Maulana Rabe Hasni Nadvi. He had one-to-one meeting with the rector for over an hour, Congress sources said.

The issue of Right to Education and reported confusion among Muslims over it was discussed, they said adding Rahul assured him that this would be removed.

When asked to give his blessings to Rahul, the rector cited his relations with the Nehru-Gandhi family and said he always had good wishes for them, the sources said. UPCC chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi later told reporters that Rahul wanted to visit Nadva for some time and went to the noted institution on Sunday for the first time.

"Both Rahul and Sonia Gandhi have met Rabe Hasni Nadvi, who also belongs to Rae Bareli, several times," she said.

Asked about the purpose of the visit, Bahuguna said she possibly issues related to minority affairs, their welfare and what is being done by the central government in this regard were discussed.

On whether the visit was a fallout of another Islamic seminary Darul-uloom Deoband terming the proposed reservation to backward Muslim as a political gimmick, Joshi said it had nothing to do with it.

"It was a promise made in the agenda of the party in 2009 Lok Sabha elections," she added. Before leaving for Delhi, Rahul met Governor B L Joshi for 25 minutes, Raj Bhawan sources said.
