New Delhi: Amethi, the Lok Sabha constituency of Congress Vice President Rahul, on Monday lost its district status.

Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court struck down erstwhile BSP government’s decision to create Amethi district. The court said that the new district, carved by borrowing three Assembly seats from Rae Bareli and two from Sultanpur, was created illegally.

On July, 2010, Mayawati made Amethi a district and named it Chatrapati Sahuji Maharaj. But in 2012, when Samajwadi Party came to power, it renamed it to Amethi.
