According to sources, Gandhi was accompanied by AICC general secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh Madhusudan Mistry, state PCC chief Nirmal Khatri and chairman of AICC Scheduled Castes department K Raju.

Rahul's visit comes after the fifth accused in the Badaun gang-rape was arrested. The two Dalit sisters were gang-raped on May 27 and were found hanging from a tree in Badaun earlier this week.

Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh earlier in the day condemned the gang-rape incident and hit out at the officials involved in the heinous crime.

“Disgusting behaviour of UP Police in Budayun Rape Case. Policemen abetting this crime deserve most severe punishment along with the accused,” he said on Twitter.

All the five main accused, including two policemen, have been arrested in connection with the gang-rape. The Uttar Pradesh government has promised to set up a fast-track court to punish the culprits.

The incident had triggered protests in the area with villagers alleging police apathy, following which an FIR was registered against seven persons.
