To ensure good quality catering in trains, the government said that various steps, including imposition of heavy penalties on entities for deficient services, are being initiated.

The railways daily receive a number of complaints of bad quality food being served in trains. On August 9, a mouse was seen eating leftover food in the plate in the Ranchi bound Rajdhani Express.

A passenger registered complaint regarding this. Taking it seriously, several top officials spoke to him and assured to plug loophole in the catering service.
There will also be third-party audit of the catering service to examine the quality of food, hygiene and cleanliness in the pantry car and base kitchen, which will be carried out alongside the in-house audit.

Apart from that, if a train is running late by more than two hours, the passengers will be served with tea, coffee, other refreshments and meal.
