Jaipur: The Rajasthan government has asked its officers to chart out a plan to stop child marriages on the occasion of 'Akshya Tritiya' in 2012.

The trend of child marriages on Akshay Tritiya, which comes in summers, is continuing in some rural areas in the desert state and such cases often come to light despite arrangements so the government has directed officials well in advance to prepare and execute effective policy.

Principal Secretary (Home) G S Sandhu said appropriate action will be taken against those officials who failed to check child marriages in their respective districts.

"It is needed to change mentality about child marriage. We want to ensure that no child marriage takes place anywhere in the state," he said.

"I also asked officials of concerning department to create awareness among rural people, schools, children about the negative impact (both legal and social) of child marriage," he said.
