Jaipur: Taking cognizance of Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot’s appeal for the release of Pakistani microbiologist Dr Mohammed Khalil Chishti on humanitarian grounds, who has been languishing in a Rajasthan jail for the past 19 years in a murder case, Rajasthan’s acting Governor Shivraj Patil on Tuesday sought more clarifications from the government on this matter.

Governor Shivraj Patil held a discussion with Additional Chief Secretary (Home) P K Deb on the issue and asked him to send a detailed report within a week.

Khalil Chishti, a Pakistani national, came to India 19 years back to visit his brother in Ajmer where he happened to indulge in a brawl with his brother’s neighbour in which one person was killed. Chisti was accused of the murder and has been languishing in jail since then. His passport was seized after a murder case was filed against him.

Earlier on Friday, CM Gehlot along with SC Justice Markandey Katju had sent a mercy petition for his release to the Governor.
