Rajnath is likely to give up the position of BJP president after he was appointed as the Home Minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Cabinet.

The route to find the new president of the saffron party is not going to be a pushover by any means for the top brass of the BJP and RSS as Rajnath had done a tremendous job in his stint, guiding the party to its best ever performance in Lok Sabha elections.

Rajnath had also successfully and efficiently dealt with the rift created in the NDA fold over naming Modi as their prime ministerial candidate last year.

BJP general secretary Jagan Prakash Nadda and Modi’s close aide Amit Shah are two favourites for the top post.

Shah is largely credited for the BJP’s stunning electoral triumph in Uttar Pradesh where the saffron party won 71 out of 80 Lok Sabha seats.

However, considering the ongoing fake encounter cases against Shah, Nadda – another close aide of Modi, might have slight edge.

Other issues like allocation of Cabinet portfolios and sulking NDA ally Shiv Sena, who could only get one berth in the Cabinet despite a good performance in the elections were also reportedly discussed in the meet.

The Home Minister later met the Prime Minister.
