He gained recognition for his role as a cop in Milan Luthria’s Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai, Imtiaz Ali’s Highway and his steamy scenes with Mahie Gill in Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster didn’t go unnoticed either. Apart from his acting abilities, he has garnered more attention for his kissing scenes.

The Haryanvi boy Hooda worked in a series of unsuccessful projects. It was until Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai in 2010, which proved to be a turning point in his career. He was subsequently noted for his performances in Jannat 2, Murder 3, Jism 2 and the most recent in Sajid Nadiadwala's Kick. His upcoming projects are Rang Rasiya, Ungli, Shooter, Fanne Khan, Main Aur Charles and Pooja Bhatt's Bad.

Hooda began acting in school productions at a young age. After completing his studies in Melbourne in Australia, he returned to India and began modeling and acting in theatre.

In 2011, a global online survey conducted by Internet Movie Database ranked him seventh on its list of the "20 sexiest men in the world".

On the personal front, he was in a relationship with former Miss Universe and actress Sushmita Sen from 2004 to 2006. He later said that ending their relationship changed his career. He began dating actress Neetu Chandra in mid 2010 but the couple called it a split in 2013.
