The Indian side is currently without a head coach following the end of Duncan Fletcher's tenure after the India's World Cup semi-final loss to Australia.

If reports are to be believed, Sashtri will also become the highest paid cricket coach in the world with Rs 7 crore a year as salary. He will be the second Indian after Kapil Dev in 2000 to coach the Indian team.

Shastri successfully guided Team India during the Australia tour and 2015 World Cup and also enjoys lot of confidence from the players. The former all rounder has done great work with Indian team in the recent past which makes him the top contender for the coach's post.

Prior to the Bangladesh series Sashtri said he may stay longer and will have a discussion with BCCI after his return from Bangladesh tour.

Sashtri had a Rs 4 crore a year contract as a TV commentator and he was getting Rs 6 crore annually for his services as Team Director.

Duncan Fletcher, whose tenure with the Indian team ended after the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, was being paid Rs 4.5 crore by the BCCI.

Shastri during a press conference earlier had said India doesn't need a coach and if needed he can double up as coach with already three specialist coaches being there to assist him.
