New Delhi: Naveen Jindal-controlled Jindal Steel and Power (JSPL) on Friday said Ravi Uppal will join the company as its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer with effect from October 1.

"I am very pleased at the appointment of a business leader like Mr ravi Uppal who has an impressive record of achievements in diverse business domains. I am sure that his presence would give further impetus to our growth plans," Jindal was quoted as saying in a company release.

Uppal would report to the Group Chairman Naveen Jindal, it added.

Though the release did not clearly mention if the post of Chairman and Managing Director in JSPL has been bifurcated, it appeared that the position held by Jindal has been split.

Jindal may now be the Chairman of the company, while Uppal being Managing Director and CEO.

An alumni of IIT Delhi and IIM Ahmedabad, Uppal has in the past worked with companies like ABB, Volvo and Larsen and Toubro.

JSPL, having presence in areas like steel, power, mining and infrastructure, has an annual turnover of over USD 3.5 billion. The company has committed investments in excess of USD 30 billion.

Uppal's appointment is in line with Group's continued effort to further strengthen and professionalise its management for achieving an accelerated growth and business excellence both in the domestic and international markets, it said.

He has over 35 years of experience of working in areas like engineering and infrastructural segments in India and abroad.

"Uppal's path has been well laid out and he is destined to lead the Group to its rightful place in the global firmament," the release said.

Uppal had been in L&T since he joined the company in 2009 as managing director of L&T (Power). In 2010, he was elevated to the Board level. His last designation with the company was whole-time director and president of the power vertical.

He had lost the race to become the chief executive of L&T when the management was re-jigged earlier this year.
