Kolkata: The West Bengal government might have decided to rename the state as ‘Paschimbanga’ after arriving at consensus in the all-party meeting, but the new nomenclature has ignited a new series of debate among intellectuals, linguists, politicians and even the common man.

Terming the decision to be an unfriendly move for non-Bengalis, some intellectuals and linguists believe changing name from West (W) to Paschim (P) hardly makes any difference in its placement in on alphabetical ladder.

They say Bengal (B) would have been a better alternative.

Few people, however, also raised question about the relevance of re-naming Calcutta as Kolkata, saying Calcutta is still in use in the state like ‘Calcutta High Court’ and ‘Calcutta University’.
