Lucid dreams are considered by many psychologists to be an intermediate stage between two forms of consciousness. They are coherent dreams that a dreamer is aware of and can manipulate it to control the outcome or behavior.

Researchers zapped the sleepers with a very gentle, targeted electrical current and were able to send them into a state of lucid dreaming.

According to sources, the researchers tested 27 people with no previous experience of lucid dreaming over several nights.

After three minutes of uninterrupted Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, a weak electric current was applied to their scalps.

A few seconds after the brain stimulation, the volunteers were waken up and reported having lucid dreams. They said they realized they were dreaming and being able to control the dream plot.

As per the sources, the scientists have said that the technique might be used to help people with mental illnesses such as post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and some types of schizophrenia.
