Lucknow: The UP police will no longer be seen sporting a revolver along with their uniform. Instead, they will be flashing a 9mm pistol.

Toeing the lines of Delhi, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, the state police will bid adieu to revolvers from their arsenal and instead, inspectors and SHOs will be equipped with 9 mm pistol. The Central government has also given its nod in the matter.

Earlier, the police were using .32 and 455 bore revolvers. Since the production of its cartridges has almost stopped, the police had to adjust with the available stock.

Officials from police headquarters wrote a letter to Union Home Minister P Chidambaram in this regard following which the Centre approved inclusion of pistols in the arsenal.

According to police sources, sub-inspectors will be equipped with glock pistol and the administration has approved of purchasing 1310 glock pistol from Austria.
