New Delhi: Rice procurement in the kharif marketing season 2010-11 (October-September) has touched 34.1 million tonnes, nearly 2.5 million tonnes more than last year.

According to statistics, 34.1 million tonnes of rice has been procured by the various government agencies by October 27, 2011.

It had stood at 31.8 million tonnes during the same period last year.

Andhra Pradesh has led the states by procuring 9.61 million tonnes followed by Punjab 8.63 million tonnes and Chhattisgarh 3.7 million tonnes, an official statement said here on Thursday.

Uttar Pradesh and Orissa also contributed significantly by procuring 2.5 million tonnes and 2.4 million tonnes, respectively, this year.

UP, Orissa, Bihar and West Bengal are among the beneficiaries of government's special incentive of Rs 300 crore to usher in the second green revolution in Eastern States.
