Patna: Lending his support for establishing a Central University at Patna, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Dr Raghuvansh Prasad Singh has requested Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to send a proposal for opening three Central Universities in Bihar.

Interestingly, the proposal has also been made for starting a deemed University in the state. He clarified that he was ready to take up the issue in the Parliament.

A copy comprising reply of Dr. Daggubati Purandeswari, Minister of State for Human Resource Development (Higher Education) has also been sent to Nitish Kumar in which it has been clarified that the Centre has not acted upon the issue since it has not yet received any proposal for granting Central University status to Patna University.

To this regard, Dr Purandeswari, however, clarified that 300 acres of land near Panchanpur (Gaya) which is owned by the HRD Ministry has been identified for setting up a Central Varsity in the state after holding due consultation with Defence Ministry officials.

It has also been said that a Central University is already functioning temporarily from Patna.

Dr Prasad has said that since the Centre has not received a proposal in this regard so far, a request letter should be sent immediately to it. He clarified that on the basis of area, Bihar holds claim for setting up of 4 universities.
