Tiruchirappalli (TN): A bid by a gang to loot a nationalised bank's branch at a village near on Tuesday failed as the safety alarm went off, police said.
   
The thieves gained entry into the Indian Overseas Bank branch by breaking open the front door lock in the early hours but the alarm went off once they entered the cash room, forcing them to abandon their plan and flee.
   
Police said the image of one of the gangsters had been recorded in the CCTV system in the branch located at Rajivgandhi Nagar near Somarasampettai village. The branch had no security guard, they added.
   
In another incident, miscreants broke an ATM of the South Indian Bank at the busy Madurai Road here but could not open the currency locker.
   
Police said the ATM, its communication system and sensors were found broken on Monday.
   
The ATM centre neither had any watchman nor CCTV camera, they said adding the miscreants had made the attempt when there was power cut in the area.
