The RTI application was filed by activist Subhash Chandra Agrawal.

DAVP revealed that the money was spent on the Bharat Nirman campaign in four major modes - display classified, printed publicity, radio spot and outdoor publicity.

Around Rs 187 crore was spent in the 2013-14 fiscal, which was also government’s last year at the Centre.

Out of the 187 crore spent in the year 2013-2014, most of it was spent on radio advertisements (Rs 120 crore).

Around Rs 49 crore on display classifieds, Rs 10.28 crore on outdoor publicity and Rs 8 crore on printed publicity were spent by the Manmohan Singh-led government in the last year of its tenure.

More importantly, the money spent on the Bharat Nirman campaign in the 2013-14 year was also significantly higher than what the UPA government spent in preceding years.

When asked about the amount of public money spent by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led government in the much-hyped ‘India Shining’ campaign, DAVP replied that it did not have any record pertaining to it.
