Guwahati: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s chances to get elected unopposed in biennial elections for two Rajya Sabha seats from Assam got shattered on Thursday when All India United Democratic Front candidate chose not to  withdraw his nomination papers.

With the last date for withdrawal of nomination papers ending on Thursday, all the three contestants – Manmohan Singh, who is the first Congress candidate, Santius Kujur, the party's second candidate and AIUDF's Aminul Islam remained in the fray.

Polling for the two Upper House seats would be held on May 30 from 9 am to 4 pm and counting of votes would be carried out on the same day at 5 pm.

However, the Prime Minister's victory is certain as he is the lone contestant for the first preference votes of 78 Congress MLAs in the 126-member Assembly, while Kujur and Islam are contesting for the second seat.
