New Delhi: MPs from across the political spectrum on Tuesday condoled the death of Union Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, saying his untimely demise is a "big loss" to the whole nation.

Congress General Secretary Janardan Dwivedi said the untimely demise of Deshmukh is a big loss not only for the party and Maharashtra but for the entire country.

"Deshmukh had a unique ability of calmly discharging his duties even in difficult situations," he told reporters.

He said since the Maharashtra leader was a member of CWC, a special meeting of the Congress Working Committee will be called to condole his death.

BJP leader Ravishankar Prasad said "Deshmukh had a mixing nature and he bore no ill will against opposition leaders."

NCP leader Tariq Anwar said he enjoyed special relationship with Deshmukh since youth Congress days.

J P Nadda of the BJP said Deshmukh had the capability to take everybody along irrespective of their party affiliation. CPI leader D Raja said his death is not only a big loss to the nation but to the political sphere as a whole.

"His death is a major loss not only to a particular political party but to the entire political arena," said Congress leader Rajiv Shukla.

"He was a competant chief minister and a union minister. He was working on many projects of national interest and the void left by his death can never be filled," he said and added that his death is also a loss to BCCI.

Deshmukh was the president of Mumbai Cricket Association and chairman of BCCI's media committee.

Railway Minister Mukul Roy said Deshmukh served the society with full dedication during his long political career.

His contribution to Maharashtra and the country will be remembered for long, the TMC leader said.

Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut said, "After Sharad Pawar, Deshmukh was the tallest leader of Maharashtra in Delhi politics. His passing away is a big loss for Maharashtra".

Condoling the death of Deshmukh, Congress Lok Sabha member Sanjay Nirupam said it is a great loss for the party and the nation.

"His work as Chief Minister of Maharashtra is still appreciated by the people," he said.

Minister of Road Transport and Highways C P Joshi said, "I am deeply grieved, its a loss to the nation. He has contributed significant to the development of Maharashtra."

Senior Congress leader P C Chacko, who was chairing the Lok Sabha when Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde announced the demise of Deshmukh, condoled the passing away of the Maratha leader saying it is a great loss for the Congress party.

Minister of State for Defence MM Pallam Raju said, "He was a great leader and very good and well behaved man. It is a tremendous loss to the Parliament and to the government.”

Minister of State for Railways K H Muniyappa said Deshmukh was a mass leader and the party will never forget his service to the nation.

Condoling Deshmukh's death, Punjab Governor Shivraj Patil said he was a seasoned politician and an able administrator who always strived for upliftment of the poor.

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said Deshmukh's death was a huge loss for the Congress party.

Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said in his death, the country had lost a seasoned parliamentarian and a visionary statesman.

The void created by his death would be difficult to fill, he said.

Haryana Governor Jagannath Pahadia also condoled Deshmukh's demise.

Uttarakhand Governor Aziz Qureshi described Deshmukh as a dynamic, visionary and an able politician and said his death was an irreparable loss for the country.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna said Deshmukh's demise was a great loss for the country.

Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee President Chandrabhan said Deshmukh was a talented and energetic politician.

Jammu and Kashmir Governor NN Vohra condoled Deshmukh's death and conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved family.

Deshmukh had contributed a lot for welfare of the people, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said.

In his passing away, the country had lost a great parliamentarian and a sincere friend of the people, he said.

Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh said Deshmukh's death was a colossal loss for the Congress party.

Deshmukh was a seasoned politician and an able administrator who strived tirelessly for upliftment of the poor, he said.
