Besides, a weak opening of the domestic equity market also put pressure on the rupee, dealers said. The rupee had gained 5 paise to close at 61.17 against the dollar in Thursday's trade on fresh selling of US currency by exporters.

Meanwhile, the benchmark BSE Sensex fell by 144.44 points, or 0.66 percent, at 21,630.17 in morning trade on Friday.
